Solo female safety

Puerto Vallarta is a popular, comfortable solo-female destination, especially around the walkable Zona Romántica and Malecón. Violent crime in the tourist areas is uncommon; the realistic things to manage are petty theft, drink safety on a night out, strong surf on some beaches, and using registered taxis or Uber after dark — the same sense you’d use anywhere.

Is it safe at night?

The Zona Romántica, the Malecón and Los Muertos Beach areas are lively and well-trodden in the evening. Stick to the lit, busy central streets, watch your drink, keep valuables low-key, and use Uber or an authorised taxi rather than walking long distances alone late at night.

Getting around safely

The Zona Romántica and Malecón are walkable; cheap local buses, authorised taxis and Uber cover the wider bay. Use authorised taxis from the airport rank or Uber rather than unmarked cars, and agree fares with street taxis up front (Uber shows the price in advance).

For women travellers: Solo women find the Zona Romántica and Malecón comfortable and social; use Uber or authorised taxis after dark, watch your drink, and take normal care with surf and rip currents at the beaches.

Safest areas to stay

Where to take extra care

  • Quiet, unlit streets away from the tourist core late at night — use normal awareness
  • Some beaches have strong surf and rip currents — check conditions before swimming

Common scams & how to avoid them

Timeshare touts

Friendly “greeters” near the Malecón offer free tours, breakfasts or activities to pull you into a high-pressure timeshare pitch. Politely decline and keep walking.

Taxi overcharging

Street taxis are unmetered and quote inflated tourist fares. Agree the price before getting in, or use Uber, which shows the fare upfront.

ATM skimming

Use ATMs inside banks rather than standalone street machines, and cover the keypad when entering your PIN.

What to wear & cultural notes

Beachwear is fine on the sand and Malecón, but cover up a little in town and to enter the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Light, breathable clothing and strong sun protection are the practical essentials.

LGBTQ+ safety

Exceptionally welcoming — Puerto Vallarta is the gay-beach capital of Latin America, centred on the Zona Romántica and Los Muertos Beach, with marriage equality across Mexico and Vallarta Pride each May. Same-sex couples are completely at ease in the tourist areas.

Legal status: legal. Same-sex marriage legal in all states as of 2022. Mexico City and Guadalajara have major LGBTQ+ communities. More conservative in rural areas. Generally tolerant in tourist areas.Source: ILGA World 2025
