Solo female safety

Prague is a comfortable, easy city for solo women, with low violent crime and excellent transport. Walking alone in the central districts day or night is normal. The genuine annoyances are pickpockets working the tourist crowds (Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, tram 22, the metro), taxi overcharging, and overpriced “tourist trap” bars and currency-exchange booths.

Is it safe at night?

The centre, Vinohrady and Žižkov are lively and safe in the evening. Apply normal caution in the heavy-drinking nightlife around Old Town and Wenceslas Square, and avoid the rip-off “gentlemen’s clubs”. Use the Bolt or Uber app rather than hailing street taxis after dark.

Getting around safely

The metro, trams and buses are clean, cheap and safe — buy a time pass and validate it. Pickpockets work crowded trams (especially the 22) and the metro, so keep bags in front. Use Bolt or Uber instead of street taxis, which overcharge tourists.

For women travellers: The EU-wide victim support helpline 116 006 operates in Czechia; the universal emergency line is 112.

Safest areas to stay

  • Old Town (Staré Město)
  • Malá Strana (Lesser Town)
  • Vinohrady
  • New Town (Nové Město)
  • Žižkov

Where to take extra care

  • Wenceslas Square late at night — drunk crowds, scam “clubs” and pickpockets
  • Tourist-trap exchange booths and unmarked street taxis

Common scams & how to avoid them

Taxi overcharging

Street taxis inflate fares for tourists. Use the Bolt or Uber app, where the price is fixed in advance.

Dodgy currency exchange

Booths advertising “0% commission” give terrible rates. Use a bank ATM or a reputable exchange, and never change money on the street.

Bar/club bill scams

Some Old Town “gentlemen’s clubs” and touts present huge bills. Avoid touts and check prices before ordering.

What to wear & cultural notes

No restrictions — dress as you like. Cover shoulders and knees inside churches and the cathedral. It’s cold October–March, so pack warm layers.

LGBTQ+ safety

Czechia is among Central Europe’s most LGBTQ-friendly countries — same-sex relations are legal, registered partnerships are recognised (with rights expanded from 2025), and Prague has a visible, lively scene centred on Vinohrady. LGBTQ+ travellers are very comfortable here.

Legal status: legal. Same-sex relations legal; registered partnerships since 2006, upgraded with expanded "partnership" rights from 2025 (short of full marriage). Prague is among Central Europe's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities.Source: ILGA World 2025
