The scene

The West Village — home to the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, where the 1969 uprising launched the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement — is hallowed ground and still lively. Hell’s Kitchen is the busiest current bar-and-nightlife hub, and Brooklyn (Bushwick) hosts a thriving queer alternative scene.

Where to go

  • West Village — the Stonewall Inn and Christopher Street, historic heart
  • Hell’s Kitchen — the densest current cluster of bars and clubs
  • Bushwick, Brooklyn — younger, alternative queer nightlife

Where to stay

The West Village or Chelsea/Hell’s Kitchen put you central and in the scene; both are safe, walkable and well-connected.

Social climate

Openly welcoming and mainstream — among the most LGBTQ+-comfortable cities anywhere. Public affection is unremarkable across Manhattan and much of Brooklyn, backed by strong anti-discrimination protections.

Pride & events

NYC Pride in late June is one of the world’s largest, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising; the city was the host of WorldPride 2019. Brooklyn Pride and many other events run through June.

Trans travellers: New York has strong legal protections for trans people and one of the most visible, established trans communities in the world.

Practical tips
