Solo female safety

Doable and hugely rewarding, but more intense than Italy’s gentler cities. Stay alert in crowds and on transport, keep valuables zipped away and out of sight, and project confidence. The issues are petty theft and some catcalling, not typically assault.

Is it safe at night?

The lively historic centre, Chiaia and the seafront are fine in the evening with people around. Keep to busier streets, avoid the deserted edges of the centre and around the main station (Garibaldi) late, and watch your bag.

Getting around safely

The metro, funiculars and Circumvesuviana train reach the sights, but pickpockets work crowded carriages — keep bags in front and zipped. Use official white taxis with the meter, or an app; cross the wild traffic decisively and predictably.

For women travellers: The day-to-day reality is petty theft and some catcalling rather than danger. A zipped cross-body bag worn on the building side, valuables out of sight, and alertness on crowded transport handle the vast majority of it.

Safest areas to stay

Where to take extra care

  • Around Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi late at night
  • Quiet edges of the Spanish Quarter after dark
  • Crowded transport (pickpocketing)

Common scams & how to avoid them

Pickpocketing & scooter bag-snatching

Thieves on scooters snatch bags and phones from pedestrians, and pickpockets work crowded buses, the metro and markets. Wear a cross-body bag on the building side, zipped and in front.

Taxi overcharging

Some taxis skip the meter or quote inflated flat fares. Insist on the meter or use an app, and know the fixed airport/port tariffs.

What to wear & cultural notes

Normal European city dress; cover shoulders and knees to enter churches. Keep expensive jewellery and cameras out of sight to avoid attracting snatch-thieves.

LGBTQ+ safety

Italy recognises civil unions (2016) but not full same-sex marriage, and the south is more traditional and Catholic than the north. Naples is broadly tolerant in tourist life, but discretion feels more comfortable here than in Milan or Rome.

Legal status: legal. Same-sex civil unions recognised since 2016. Same-sex marriage not yet legal as of 2025. Milan and Rome have LGBTQ+ communities. More conservative in rural areas and the south.Source: ILGA World 2025
