Luxor Travel Guide

The world’s greatest open-air museum — Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Nile.

Luxor sits on the site of ancient Thebes and holds the densest concentration of monuments on earth: the vast temple complex of Karnak, Luxor Temple lit at night, and across the river the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the terraced temple of Hatshepsut. It’s the classic starting point for a Nile cruise and, for most visitors, the highlight of Egypt. A guide and a little planning turn the heat and the hustle into an unforgettable, manageable trip.

📅 Best time

October–April is the season — warm, clear days ideal for the tombs and temples. Summer (May–September) is punishingly hot (regularly 40°C+), so sightseeing is limited to early morning; prices and crowds drop right down.

💷 Daily budget

$50–100 mid-range including a guide and site tickets; Nile cruises are priced separately and are excellent value.

🗓️ Ideal length

2–3 days for the main sites, or as one end of a 3–4 night Nile cruise.

💱 Currency

Egyptian pound (EGP). Carry cash (including small notes for tips/baksheesh); cards work in hotels and larger venues.

🗣️ Language

Arabic; English is widely used in tourism. A licensed Egyptologist guide massively improves the experience.

Is Luxor safe?

General safety

Luxor is a heavily touristed area with a strong security presence and low violent crime against visitors. The dominant hassles are persistent touts, hustling and overcharging around the sites, plus the extreme heat — firm politeness and a pre-booked guide or tour handle almost all of it.

Solo female travellers

Solo women do travel Luxor, but persistent unwanted attention and verbal harassment are common, as elsewhere in Egypt. The honest, effective approach most solo women use is to book a reputable guided tour or Nile cruise: it removes most of the hassle, handles logistics, and makes the experience relaxed rather than a daily negotiation. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and arrange trusted transport rather than hailing on the street.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Egypt is not a safe place to be openly LGBTQ+: same-sex relationships aren’t explicitly criminalised but people are prosecuted under “debauchery” and “public morals” laws, and social attitudes are hostile. There is no open scene. LGBTQ+ travellers do visit, but discretion is essential — avoid apps and any public displays of affection.

Getting around & essentials

The East Bank (Karnak, Luxor Temple, town) and West Bank (the tombs) sit across the Nile, linked by bridge and local ferries. Most people cover the sites by private guide, tour or a pre-agreed taxi/Uber — agree fares first. A dawn hot-air balloon over the West Bank is a Luxor signature. Many visitors arrive or leave by Nile cruise to Aswan.

Luxor FAQs

Is Luxor safe for solo female travellers?

Luxor has low violent crime and a strong tourism-security presence, but solo women should expect persistent hassle and unwanted attention. The approach that works for most is a reputable guided tour or Nile cruise, which removes the daily negotiation, plus modest dress and pre-arranged transport.

How many days do you need in Luxor?

Two to three days covers Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple at a sensible pace around the heat. Many people experience Luxor as one end of a 3–4 night Nile cruise to or from Aswan.

Should you start a Nile cruise in Luxor or Aswan?

Both work; Luxor has the bigger, more demanding sites and Aswan is gentler and more scenic. Sailing Luxor→Aswan goes against the current and is common; many prefer Aswan→Luxor to build up to Luxor’s highlights. See our Luxor vs Aswan comparison.

Do you need a guide in Luxor?

It’s strongly recommended — a licensed Egyptologist brings the monuments to life, handles ticketing and greatly reduces hassle. It’s the single biggest upgrade to a Luxor trip.
