Zermatt has two peak seasons: summer (mid-June–September) for hiking, wildflowers and clear Matterhorn views, and winter (December–April) for skiing and glacier slopes. The shoulder weeks (late April–May and October–November) are quiet and cheaper, but many lifts and trails close for maintenance.

Best weather

July and August are warmest for hiking, with the best chance of clear high peaks and open trails.

Fewer crowds

Late June and September (summer) and the quieter edges of the ski season.

Lowest prices

The shoulder weeks (late April–May, late October–November) are cheapest, but with many closures.

When to avoid

The between-seasons (roughly May and November) when many lifts and trails close for maintenance and weather is unsettled.

Best time to visit Zermatt — FAQs

When is the best time to visit Zermatt?

Mid-June to September for hiking, wildflowers and clear Matterhorn views with everything open, or December to April for skiing and glacier slopes. July and August have the best high-trail weather.

When should you avoid Zermatt?

The between-seasons — roughly May and November — when many lifts and trails close for maintenance and the weather is unsettled. They’re quiet and cheaper, but the high excursions may be limited.

Can you see the Matterhorn year-round?

Yes, weather permitting — the Matterhorn is visible in every season, and the Gornergrat railway runs year-round. Clear mornings, common in summer and on crisp winter days, give the best views.

Is Zermatt only for skiers?

Not at all — summer is superb for hiking (the Five Lakes walk with its Matterhorn reflections is a classic), the high excursions and simply the scenery. Zermatt is a genuine year-round mountain destination.
