🇨🇭 Interlaken · When to go

The best time to visit Interlaken

Interlaken has two distinct high seasons: summer (June–September) for hiking, lakes and clear peaks, and winter (December–March) for skiing in the neighbouring valleys. Summer is the classic choice — long days, green trails and swimmable lakes — while May and October are the quiet, good-value shoulders between the two.

Best overall

June–September for hiking, lakes and the big mountain excursions; December–March for snow.

Best weather

July and August are warmest and best for the high trails and lake swimming, with the longest days.

Fewer crowds

Late May–early June and October — green, mild and much quieter than midsummer.

Lowest prices

The shoulder months (May, late October–November) and outside school holidays are the best value in a pricey region.

When to avoid

April and November are the “between seasons” — many mountain lifts close for maintenance, weather is unsettled, and the high excursions may be limited. Great for quiet and price, less so for peak-bagging.

Best time to visit Interlaken — FAQs

When is the best time to visit Interlaken?

June to September for hiking, lakes and clear mountain views, or December to March for skiing in the nearby valleys. July and August have the best high-trail weather but the biggest crowds.

What is the cheapest time to visit Interlaken?

The shoulder months — May and late October–November — and travelling outside school holidays are the best value in an expensive region.

Is Interlaken worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want snow — it’s a gateway to skiing in Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren, with beautiful alpine scenery, though some summer hikes and higher trails are closed.

When do the mountain lifts close in Interlaken?

Many higher cablecars and railways pause for maintenance in the between-seasons (roughly April and November), so check operating dates if a specific excursion like Jungfraujoch is on your list.
