The best time to visit Hawaii

Hawaii is a year-round destination with famously steady weather. April–May and September–October are the sweet spots — great conditions with fewer crowds and better prices. Winter (December–March) brings big North Shore surf, whale-watching and peak holiday crowds; summer is hot and busy. The leeward (west/south) coasts are the driest.

Best overall

April–May and September–October — excellent weather, thinner crowds, better value.

Best weather

Year-round; the driest sunshine is on the leeward coasts, and summer is warmest.

Fewer crowds

The spring and autumn shoulders (Apr–May, Sep–Oct), away from school and holiday breaks.

Lowest prices

The shoulder months, especially after New Year until mid-March and again in the autumn.

When to avoid

Christmas–New Year and mid-summer for peak crowds and prices; and the wetter, rougher-surf winter if you want calm swimming.
