The best time to visit Banff

Banff is a year-round destination with two peaks: summer (June–September) for hiking, the bluest lakes and the famous late-September golden larches, and winter (December–March) for skiing. The lakes are most vivid in mid-summer, and Moraine Lake’s road is only open roughly June–October.

Best overall

June–September for hiking and the bluest lakes; late September for golden larches.

Best weather

Summer (June–August) is warmest and driest; September is crisp and clear.

Fewer crowds

Late September–October (after summer, before ski season) and late spring.

Lowest prices

The shoulder months (late April–May, October–November) are cheapest.

When to avoid

The “shoulder” of April and November can be grey with some closures between seasons; mid-winter is beautiful but bitterly cold.
